Research on the Application of Flipped Classroom Model Based on MOOC in the Course PHP Dynamic Website Development

INTRODUCTION MOOC is an online course that interweaves the five elements of lecture video, homework exercise, forum interaction, mail and examination [1]. It has the characteristics of wide audience, rich learning resources, flexible learning time, strong autonomy and so on. In recent years, MOOC has been widely used in academic education and non-academic education training in colleges and universities all over the world[2]. The flipped classroom model of instruction is a relatively new teaching strategy that reverses the traditional learning environment through moving the lecture outside the classroom and moving homework and exercises inside the classroom. Flipping classroom is a thorough subversion of the traditional classroom teaching model and process, which has led to deep study of researchers[6]. Currently, MOOC and flipped classroom have become one of the focuses of educational informatization in China, especially it is applied widely in primary and middle school teaching. It is of great practical significance to promote the application of flipped classroom in higher diploma education and non-diploma education in China[5]. MOOC lacks interaction between teachers and students, as is the case with students. Moreover MOOC style of education mainly depends on students’ perseverance and self-discipline. Students who are unable to manage their time often drop out of these courses. We can use MOOC and flipped classroom to allow students to learn online independently, then use the classroom time for recitation, active learning, problem solving, and hands-on experiences[7]. The combination of MOOC and flipped classroom gives a full play to the advantages of educational informatization, and enhancing the ability of students to cooperate, communicate with each other and solve problems in classes.

PROBLEM ANALYSIS PHP dynamic website development is a skill training course for teachers of vocational education schools who major in computer applications. Through theoretical learning and programming practice, trainees have the ability to use PHP, MySql, HTML, CSS, Javascript and other related knowledge to develop Web. Because of its practicability and low cost of learning, all of the trainees like to learn this course. Before 2014, traditional teaching methods were adopted in training First, teachers taught basic knowledge, then assigned practical training tasks for trainees, finally answered questions for trainees. The knowledge base of trainees were not the same, acceptance and learning ability were not the same either, but teachers couldn’t take into account every student. Some students mastered quickly, but some others who had weak foundation felt unable to start at the same time and their initiative were greatly affected, and even a sense of frustration was caused. Final impact on participants’ performance. In addition, due to more contents, training time was about only five days, which led to the fact that teaching contents could not be further developed, and teaching effect was far from expectation. Justin G. Gardner believed that Flipped Classroom was mainly suitable for learning of the following three kinds of courses [9]: x Experiment-based courses; x Courses combining theory with practice; x Courses emphasizing critical thinking and problemsolving skills. The course PHP dynamic web site development is just in line with the above three features. In view of this, we introduce a combination of MOOC and Flipping Classroom in this course. Before class, teachers will upload video, PPT and other teaching materials on the MOOC platform, and students can self-study online. Students can watch the video anytime, anywhere, and they are not limited to the repeated viewing. By the learning of video content, students can prepare lessons and make up for differences. In addition, there will be some pertinent exercises in the teaching video and students will encounter some problems in the course of doing the exercises. Then teachers will give specific explanations of these problems in class. At the same time, students can discuss and solve the problems together.

ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF TEACHING EFFECT In order to observe the teaching effect of MOOC embedded Flipped Classroom model in the course PHP dynamic website development, we analyzed and evaluated the results through comparison of scores, recognition and satisfaction survey. The two groups for comparison were the teachers who major in computer network in Shandong vocation education school in 2014 and 2015 at the vocational education teacher training center of Ocean University of China. The trainees in the classes are all in-service teachers with random registration. In 2014, the traditional teaching method was adopted and the Flipped Classroom teaching method based on MOOC was adopted in 2015.
