The Reform of Vocational Colleges’ Teaching Method in the Age of Big Data

INTRODUCTION A. Big Data and the Era of Big Data Big data is a kind of special and massive data which is difficult for general software tools to obtain, manage and analyze. By making a scientific analysis of big data in modern society, the development of our society and productivity can be promoted. As the ability of computers’ data processing and storage changes from kilobyte to terabyte, together with the rapid internet development, we are led into the era of big data swiftly. [1] Big data has the following basic characteristics: (1) Scale. Big data is in large quantities. With the development of advanced network technology and the popularity of network tools, such as PC, mobile phones and tablet computers, the sources of data are constantly expanding. (2) Variety. There is a wide variety of big data, which includes structured data based on textual materials and semistructured or unstructured data, such as weblog, audio frequency, video, pictures and geographical location. (3) Value. Big data is of great value but its density is low. Because of the large scale and constant renewal of data, these valuable information may disappear in no time. Therefore, how to finish data’s value purification quickly by powerful machine algorithm becomes a difficult problem which remains to be solved under the background of big data. (4) High speed. Due to the short preservation of valuable information, it is required to extract valuable information from lots of complicated data quickly and effectively. According to figures from McKinsey Global Research Center, the data that is stored in the database of U.S. Department of Education reached 269PB in 2009. Thus it can be seen that education has become one of the sources to produce big data.[2] The era of big data has changed people’s lifestyle, which is leading people to read on the screen instead of books. The powerful big dat makes so tremendous an impact on the education system that it is becoming a subversive force to promote the innovation and reform of education system. B. A New Teaching Mode under the Era of Big Data In the Era of Big Data, students’ way of acquiring knowledge is no longer limited to classroom learning. With the rapid development of internet technology, online learning has become an important way to learn knowledge day by day. Compared with traditional classroom teaching, online learning offers students more autonomous learning room. Therefore, students themselves can not only decide when and where to study but also take courses from world-class universities. Under the Era of Big Data, some new teaching organization forms appear in some western developed countries, for example, the popular flipped classroom, micro class and mooc, etc. The increase of these new teaching modes have important reference to vocational colleges. At present, the application of big data in domestic education field is still at a groping stage. Although big data can be applied to individualized learning, prediction and teaching evaluation, there still exist many problems, such as poor personal privacy protection and low data quality, etc.[3] Although various educational institutions in China invest large amounts of resources in developing network courses every year, many course websites about PHP Programming merely enumerate materials and hardly mobilize students’ learning enthusiasm and initiative. Large learning database itself can’t change learning. If there were lack of digging and professional analysis of data, large learning database would become a mere formality. The true value of big data lies in promoting effective teaching and learning by making a specific analysis of all the data.

THE MOTIVATION FOR REFORMING PHP PROGRAMMING TEACHING With the rapid development of IT industry and the internet in recent years, there is a great need for more programmers in various large and small firms. The ratio of supply and demand between PHP programmers and employment is 1:50, making many firms unable to employ a qualified PHP programmer within a half year or more. This job is so popular among programmers that the situation where demand exceeds supply greatly may become worse in the next few years .[4] In view of the above-mentioned PHP employment trend, our college makes PHP Programming the main teaching content of dynamic website development course. The course involves so many leading courses, such as Webpage Design and Making, Photoshop and MySQL database, that it is necessary for us to master those leading courses in advance. In order to make students study effectively within a short period of time, on the one hand, the teacher should be broad in academic field and have solid theoretical basis as well as strong practical ability. On the other hand, the teacher also needs to constantly change his or her teaching methods by combing the characteristics of the students with PHP Programming.
